We routinely hear that the top dating sites on the planet (maybe an exaggeration) advertise on TV how many singles they have matched up and have led to marriages. Some of these claim to have ‘married off’ a million or so members just in the last year alone. For some of us, those figures can entice us to join or speculate as to how effective these marriages will be in the short and long term. After all, our society has such a high divorce rate that many choose to remain single. Why go to all that trouble?

For naysayers to online dating sites, you should consider some of the advantages and disadvantages first before deciding.

Advantages

• Online dating allows you to browse ‘before you buy’; This means you decide if you like a profile or not and if you should contact the member, you have total control.
• You are not compelled to reply to users if you do not want to, the choice is yours. This applies more to females.
• Your choice  of profiles is broadened from your ‘local crowd’ to a member base that can be anywhere in the country or world.
• You can really put the member to the test ie. chat to them for a few days, or a month until you are comfortable in meeting them - this is recommended if you are serious about a long term mate

Disadvantages

• You maybe showered with too many profiles and have a hard time deciding - I wish I could say this was true for men, but women yes.
• You may not distinguish what is true or false on their profile page - but then again you have time to screen them out.
• You may not like the ‘digital’ way of meeting folks since this can feel artificial - but you do get to meet them in person if you so wish.

Ok, so there you have it a set of snippets to help you get launched onto the online dating scene. For those astute readers among us, you will probably see that the ‘Disadvantages’ are not really disadvantages but are potential advantage points. However, I was speaking from the newbie point of view where they may consider these as disadvantageous at first but in time will become advantages when they all join the club!
