Chronicle The Movie And Its Relationship With The Audience

Saturday, February 11th, 2012

I watched in intrigue the recent movie ‘Chronicle’ that came out this month and has caused quite a stir amongst the movie fans. Firstly, the movie was directed by an unknown direct Josh Trank who only has 3 other movies to his credit and is about to turn 27 this Feb. 19th. It is for this reason why perhaps the imagery and the story of the movie progressed well resulting in a spectacular ending towards the end.

Chronicle The Movie And Its Relationship With The Audience

Chronicle The Movie And Its Relationship With The Audience

The young Josh Trank can relate to the teenagers of the movie and coupled with his deep insight for movie making has turned this movie into a possible cult movie. The very things we often criticize in movies to support the plot was not much evident in this movie. For starters, Andrew with his supernatural powers could quite easily go to a bank and pull out all the money but instead decides to rob a few thugs living locally. However, this was cleverly handled and almost justified by the madness streak that followed in Andrew at the end. What made this movie good and very watchable was because the audience could not ‘fault’ the storyline so much. The only technical flaw I witnessed was when Steve was moving the car in the parking lot and I could visibly see the CGI effects of the wheels against the tarmac although I would imagine other folks watching the whole car moving and not paying much attention to this trivial detail.

There was another part of the movie where Josh Trank’s portrayal of Andrew was when he became lucky with a college girl but it turned out disastrous at the end when he threw up at the most important step. A consequence of this was that he was a joke of the school the next day where the kids especially the girls made leering remarks against him. Again in reality not something that is easily believed but against the backdrop of bullying that is taking place around schools reported by the media this becomes credible.

Another aspect of the movie that becomes almost non believable but something which Trank handles with deft in making the audiences somehow believe are the way they the kids are very restrained in using their power. One of the reasons for this is that the powers did not come to them at 100% and they needed to learn and master their powers over time. This may have given a sense of greater understanding to the kids on the wider implications of the misuse of this power as they had time to learn and apply.

A turning point for the climatic ending was long developed early in the movie by Trank who portrays Andrew as an introverted and socially inept child living with an abusive father. This can be compared to the horror movie Carrie (1976) starring Sissy Spacek as the troubled child in a family who blows a fuse and ultimately causes the destruction of her school.

All in all, the movie engages the audience well in its progressive and thought provoking storyline and scores 8/10.

A Romantic Action Thriller - Kurbaan

Friday, January 20th, 2012

Movie: Kurbaan
Director: Rensil D’silva
Year: 2009
Stars: Saif Ali Khan, Kareena kapoor, Vivek Oberoi, Om Puri and Kiron Kher

Snapshot of the Story

Kurbaan is story of a terrorist group that plays the bloody game of extreme terrorism in the USA. Story seems to be inspired from post-9/11 attack on twin towers. Saif Ali Khan is a wanted terrorist and part of a terrorist group planning a series of attacks. A love story runs alongside with this intense and sensitive issue and has been beautifully directed. Music director Salim Sulaiman gave Sufiyana (traditional music from the middle east) music to the movie that was praised by all the critics and loved by the audience.

Movie reviews and rating of Kurbaan

Movie reviews and rating of Kurbaan

Storyline

Avantika (played by Kareena Kapoor) works in USA as a lecturer, but looses her job. She comes back to Delhi and starts working as a lecturer in a local college, there she meets Ehsaan (played by Saif Ali Khan) and as fellow lecturer both get attracted towards each other and love blossoms between them. Now Avantika gets a call from the same College to rejoin and both fly to USA.

Just when you think that everything was going rosy as romance of Avantika and Ehsaan is at it’s peak the story takes an unpredictable turn. Avantika comes to know that the bomb blast that took place in the New York subway was planned and executed by Ehsaan and his group. Avantika is shocked and is in a disarray knowing the fact that her husband is a terrorist on the other hand Ehsaan and his group are planning for another bomb in an aeroplane. Avanrika seeks help of Riyaaz (Vivek Oberoi) and infiltrates the gang to break off this deadly plan.

At times as an audience you will be wondering and can’t decide whether it addresses the issue of terrorism or showing terrorism for commercial benefits. There are many flaws in the movie, e.g. we all know that America become a different country post-9/11 when it comes to security and on other side you see Ehsaan a wanted terrorist roaming freely on the streets of New York which is hard to believe. With all these hiccups Kurbaan is an engaging story that works well and give you a lot of nail biting moments.

Director Rensil D’silva made a confident start to Indian cinema with great camera work of Hemant Chaturvedi and great music of duo Salim-Sulaiman that sounded flawless. The onscreen chemistry of Kareena Kapoor and Saif Ali Khan was fantastic as they share the great off screen bonding in actual life. The veteran actor Om Puri in the role of Khalu Jaan looked like a perfect cast.

Rating

Kurbaan scores 7 out 10 for handling the burning issue of terrorism so gracefully. Director Rensil D’silva made an impressive start in Bollywood.

Movie reviews and ratings of Tanu Weds Manu

Movie reviews and ratings of Tanu Weds Manu

Storyline

“Tanu weds Manu” on the front seems like an average story, but becomes special from the onset as every area of the movie has been well directed. Manu is a New York based doctor who comes to India looking for a bride. A typical Indian way to find the bride is to look for different girls and then choose the best one you like that fits your requirements. Manu starts looking at the potential bride Tanu and likes her very much. Manu agrees to marry Tanu but Tanu is not happy with this and has been in an affair with a local man. Manu comes to know this and rejects Tanu.

Later they both meet each again in a wedding as Manu comes to learn that Tanu is still single. Tanu ask for Manu’s help to get married with her boyfriend. Somewhere bottom of his heart Manu starts to love Tanu and wants to make her happy. Tanu would be happy if she gets married to her boyfriend and he could not say no to Tanu

This complicated ride becomes the romantic tale as both Manu and Tanu start liking each other but could not share their feeling for each other. Romantic scenes of Tanu and Manu were beautifully picturized as they looked like a perfect couple. Kangana Ranaut has made a special presence on the silver screen in her short career and looked very mature. R. Madhavan gave a towering performance and looked the perfect cast for the role of Manu.

Final Thoughts

“Tanu Weds Manu” is a romantic movie released after a long time in Bollywood. R.Madhavan has a few romantic hits in South Indian cinema. R. Madhavan did not have any romantic movie after “Rahna Hai Tere Dil Me”. Madhavan has been giving hits like “3 Idiots”, “Rang De Basanti” and Guru. Kangana Ranaut is the pick of cast and fits well in the role of “Tanu”. Kangana Ranaut gave a towering performance and she has matured as an actor since her debut in “Gangster”.

Rating
Movie scores 7 out of 10 for its simple yet entertaining storyline, good music and best performances by all the actors. Story fails to score more as at times it becomes very slow and as an audience you feel like fast forwarding to the main scenes.

Snapshot of the Story

Biwi No. 1 is a typical David Dhawan comedy movie. Story starts as Prem living a happy life with his wife Pooja (Karishma Kapoor) and two young and sweet children. Prem is a flamboyant, complete flirt and looks for beautiful ladies to have affair with. Rupali (Sushmita Sen) is an aspirant model looking for her first break in modeling world. Storyline

Prem (Salman Khan) is a well settled professional living a life in a leading fashion house and has a beautiful wife Pooja (Kashmira Kapoor). The nature of the job is such that Prem is surrounded with beautiful girls and always looking for an opportunity to get friendly with them. Rupali (Sushmita Sen) is an aspirant model working with Prem and during their outdoor assignment they come close and starts getting to know each other. Prem is a flirt by nature and induces a soft corner in Rupali’s heart.

Pooja comes to know about all this and asks him to choose one out of them and Prem choose Rupali. Heartbroken Pooja decides to teach him a lesson and team up with Prem’s friend Lakkhan (Anil Kapoor). This is the most interesting part of the movie as how Pooja becomes the model and uses the Tip for Tat formula.

Story of the movie is very entertaining and the comical timing of Anil Kapoor was fantastic. It is the class of the David Dhawan who creates such an intense topic beautifully sandwiched with comedy. David Dhawan is one the very few directors in Indian cinema who create humor out of any situation. Teaming up with Govinda he has created many comedy hit likes Rajababu, Coolie No.1, Saajan Chale Sasural and the list goes on and on.

Biwi No. 1 was the hit movie of 1999 and bagged many Filmfare awards. Both Salman Khan and Anil Kapoor got the award for the best actor in comic role, Karishma got the award for the best actress and so did David Dhawan who also got the award for the best director.

Movie review of Biwi no. 1

Movie review of Biwi no. 1

Final Thoughts

Biwi no. 1 is a comedy movie based on an intense plot of an extra marital affair, but as an audience you will never feel this when watching the movie and this is what David Dhawan is well known for. He is master of comedy movies for the Indian silver cinema. Karishma Kapoor looks beautiful as ever and got a promising role that she acted with so much of ease. Salman Khan got the role in which he feels comfortable and at times you feel that he is over acting. Anil Kapoor plays a good supporting hand and one cannot think of anybody else in his role.

Rating
Biwi No. 1 scores 8 out of 10 for its great direction, compelling story narration, good music and ability to engage the audience for two and half hours with relative ease.

Don 2 - Farhan Akhtar Missed the Trick

Tuesday, January 17th, 2012

Movie: Don 2
Director: Farhan Akhtar
Year: 2011
Stars: Shahrukh Khan, Priyanka Chopra, Boman Irani, Om Puri, Lara Datta, Florian Likas and Kunal Kapoor

Snapshot of the Story

Thrilling fight scene, smashing car chases, boats blown up in the air with smoke every where and a plot based around robbery inspired from the movie “Ocean 11” and “Mission Impossible” the movie Don 2 tries to re-create the same magic as it created in 2006 with remake of original Don in 1978 starting Amitabh Bachchan. Shahrukh Khan is in the role of flamboyant criminal named “Don”, planning a bank robbery and looking for a safe escape from there.

Movie review and ratings of most awaited movie of 2011 -Don 2

Movie review and ratings of most awaited movie of 2011 -Don 2

Storyline

Don 2 is an action packed film and pre-release interviews of Farhan Akhtar suggested that one should not watch this movie with expectations apart from action and thrill, but after watching the movie I felt let down and has nothing much that excites the audience apart from random car chasing scenes.

Story of Don 2 revolves around a bank robbery by Don (Shahrukh Khan) and for this he takes help of his friend or should call him enemy Vardhan (Boman Irani) who is in a Malaysian jail and escapes with help from Don. Don (Shahrukh Khan) creates a plan to get out of jail along with Vardhan (Boman Irani) and creates a master plan of bank robbery. Kunal Kapoor plays the role of a hacker that helps them to break into the security system of the bank and is picked for this assignment. Lara Datta plays the role of Don’s girlfriend and proves that the old saying “Beauty with Brain” is actually true.

Om Puri plays the role of Interpol chief and Priyanka Chopra as Roma is an Interpol investigating officer that carries old rivalry with Don (Shahrukh Khan). Movie “Don 2”
entertains you in the first half and has some good action scenes but as soon as the story enters into the second half the story looses its grip with the audience. “Don 2” in the second half is a bit slow and has nothing much to offer other than the predictable robbery and Don’s escape.

Movie Reviews and Ratings of Don 2

Movie Reviews and Ratings of Don 2

Director Farhan Akhtar has written some good Donism for “Don 2” that show he lives Don unlike any one else and expresses this in his personal interview with Farhan Akhtar where he said that the original Don in 1978 was a life changing movie for him.

Final Thoughts

Director Farhan Akhtar has worked well on the script but could not create the movie with the same intensity as one had expected. Shahrukh Khan was good in the movie and was good in action scenes but he was bit boring at times and I am sure his fans would think the same. Priyanka Chopra was good with her share of action scenes and looked natural. Kunal Kapoor fits well for the role of young computer hacker. There is no room for hit music in this movie and looks like Farhan Akhtar missed the trick here. Unfortunately, the producers worked more on the hype than to bring about a movie that excelled the original.

Rating
We give “Don 2” 6 out of 10, “Don 2” was the most awaited movie of 2011 and expectations were high but the audience gets nothing much apart from few good action scenes. The whole second half of the movie was slow and tiring to watch.

Snapshot of the Story

Storyline

Sanjay (Uday Chopra) and Anjali (Tulip Joshi) are childhood friends and share some of the sweet childhood memories. However, both are grown up and live individual lives. Both has their dating partner and are happy with their relationships. Sanjay come to know that Anjali is getting married and his feeling for Anjali comes alive which he was not able to tell her until now. His goal is to break this relationship and stop Anjali getting married Rohit (Jimmy Shergill).

Sanjay is more of a family member to Anjali’s family as he tries to convince everyone that Rohit is not the right guy for Anjali and tries to brainwash everyone into thinking that she will not be happy after marriage.

Sanjay plays all sorts of tricks with Rohit and somehow manages to defame him, but Rohit comes to know the truth and takes this as a challenge. The special appearance of Shamita Shetty in Bachelor Party with item song “Sharara Sharar” was very hot and she sizzled on the dance floor. Story of “Mere Yaar Ki Shaadi Hai” was able to engage the audience with its good pace and the tussle between Rohit and Sanjay was fun to watch.

Unsuccessful in his trick Sanjay did not manage to break Anjali and Rohit’s relationship and decides to leave, but as all Indian romantic movies have a twist in the tale Anjali feels that she loves Sanjay more than Rohit. Her heart beats for Sanjay. Two friends who spent so much time together and could not share their feelings is hard to understand. This makes the plot of the movie a little weak and not credible.

Movie review of Mere Yaar Ki Shaadi hai

Movie review of Mere Yaar Ki Shaadi hai

“Mere Yaar ki Shaadi Hai” is another Yash Raj Studio movie which focuses on a love story. Tulip Joshi looked gorgeous in her debut film and looked like a promising star. Bipasha Basu as Sanjay girlfriend looked good but director Sanjay Gadhavi missed the trick in casting her and clearly the talent is wasted. Jimmy Shergill did an average job as Rohit.

Final Thoughts

“Mere Yaar Ki Shaadi Hai” is an average movie, however this is the first time when Uday Chopra looked good and proved his acting talent. The only actor who gets the mileage from the movie is Uday Chopara. Very few directors get the chance of directing Yash Raj studio movie and Sanjay Gadhvi did not let them. Sanjay Gadhvi did a superb job and was outstanding with screenplay. Music by Pritam is the soul of the movie, but could not save the sinking boat of “Mere Yaar Ki Shaadi Hai”. Romance in the movie is the tradition of Yash Raj Studio from decades and with “Mere Yaar Ki Saadi Hai” audience expected the same intensity that they were used to but feel let down by this move.

Rating
“Mere Yaar ki Shaadi hai” bags 7 out of 10. Movie fails to score more even been with big star casts because of the somewhat artificialness of the story and fails to deliver what was expected.

The extramarital affair was the part of many Bollywood movie and Bipasa Basu got a lot of attention with the bold scenes she did, especially the kissing scene on the beach setting the stage on fire. This was the time when Indian cinema was producing bold movies. Bipasha looked very hot in the movie especially her physical intimacy with John. John did a good job and was looking quite mature as an actor and making the critics frown with his strong performance.

Final Thoughts

Bipasha Basu is the new Bangla name in the list that made amstrong statement with her stunning performance in Bollywood. Bipasha joined the elite league of Kajol, Rani Mukherjee and many more that came from Bangal. John and Bipasha were dating each other from the past three years when the movie was released and one of the reasons both were very much comfortable in the love making scenes. Debutant directors Amit Saxena and Aditya Prakash Singh did a good effort in making it a hit and used the resources well. However, they could not manage to make this movie a big hit and the main reason could be that the story lacks freshness.

Rating
Jism scores 6 out of 10 for its genuine effort and presenting the soul of the story with sincerity otherwise there are many others who utilize this topic and end up making a movie that looks like an adult movie.

The Bold Move of Mallika Sherawat with Murder

    Thursday, January 12th, 2012

    Movie: Murder
    Director: Anurag Basu
    Year: 2004
Stars: Emraan Hashmi, Mallika Sherawat and Ashmit Patel

    Snapshot of the Story

Murder is a story about being in love, marriage, extra marital affair, betrayal and murder all in one. Simran (Mallika Sherawat) and Sudhir (Ashmit Patel) are a married couple and not living a happy married life. One fine day Sunny, a college friend of Simran come into her life and they start dating. Both of them used to like each other from their college days and that turns in to betrayal with extramarital affair. Story becomes interesting when Sudhir come to know about their relationship.

    Movie review of Murder

    Movie review of Murder

    Storyline

Director Anurag Basu is known for his action thriller style of movies and he does it again with “Murder”, but this time he included the extramarital component to his success formula. Mallika Sherawat added extra zing with her bold and seductive scene that raised a lot of eyebrows.

Simran (Mallika Sherawat) is a working women in Bombay and successful but not satisfied with her married life which has become the common for many urban couples. Sudhir (Ashmit Patel) is a business man and often stays away from home which contributed to the loneliness of the couple. Mallika Sherawat looks like a perfect cast for the role and looked sensational that represented unsatisfied middle aged lady, but Ashmit Patel was not convincing in his role and someone of middle aged actor would be the best in this role.

Story takes the romantic turn or I refer to as a seductive turn when Simran meets her college boyfriend Sunny (Emraan Hashmi). Their heart still beating for each other and they start dating that leads to a physical relationship. Emraan Hashmi got the tag of “Serial Kisser” from this movie as they share quite a few onscreen kisses. Mallika Sherawat looked at ease whether in bikini or in a sexual encounter with no clothes on.

The thrill begins when Sudhir some to know the extra marital affair and plan the murder of Sunny on the other side Simran decides to confess that she has relationship with Sunny, but Sudhir forgives her. The climax of the movie is the weakest part of the movie as you will come to know that no murder took place in the first place.

Movie Reviews and rating of Murder

Movie Reviews and rating of Murder

    Final Thoughts

Murder is an experiential movie made by Anurag Basu which turns out to be bold and quite successful. Equal credit goes to Mallika Sherawat that decides to do such a bold role and was done with complete maturity and grace. Ashmit in the the role of Sudhir was a wrong choice for this cast. Emraan Hashmi was best fitted to Sunny’s role. Good music is like a tradition of Bhatt camp and “Murder” was no exception that has chart buster music and topped the chart for months.

    Rating

“Murder” scores 7 out of 10 for its bold yet gracefully handled topic of extra marital relationship especially for Indian cinema. Mallika Sherawat got a lot of appreciation for her role that other actress could have refused to accept and perhaps started to trend of bold and beautifully role with some grace. We would like to give an extra point just because of Mallika Sherawat that brings the total score to 8 out of 10.

    Snapshot of the Story

Bobby is classical innocent love story where two teenage Raj (Rishi Kapoor) and Bobby (Dimple Kapadia) fall in love, but the differences in the family status come in their way as they face many challenges in the acceptance of their relationship. Raj was a son of successful business and Bobby was a daughter of a fisherman. They get opposition from their parents, but their innocent and true love turn out to be the winner tested over time.

Romance of Dimple Kapadia and Rishi Kapoor

Romance of Dimple Kapadia and Rishi Kapoor

    Storyline

“Bobby” is another romantic and trendsetter movie made by legendary Raj Kapoor. Bobby is a story of two teenagers who are unware of the world and some of its evils, but they only believe in true love.

Rishi Kapoor was the perfect teenager and so does Dimple Kapadia and both look the perfect teenage couple. Dressing style of Dimple Kapadia made a lot of controversies. Controversies would be too harsh for the correct word but more like a big buzz in Bollywood. They looked sensational on screen, with every romantic scene touching and reaching new heights.

Bobby is the daughter of a poor fisherman, she is bold and a straightforward girl. Bobby meets Raj and starts dating. With every date they feel that they are for each other and found that they are perfect for each other, but they realize that they are very young for any kind of relationship. Their parents come into their affair and tries to split them. This is the same old plot of Bollywood showing rift between the rich and poor, but it was the screenplay of legendary Raj Kapoor which made it refreshing for the audience.

Bobby was the first movie of Rishi Kapoor as a lead actor and was the debut movie for Dimple Kapadia, but they both showed a lot of maturity in their respective roles. They looked like the perfect couple for Bobby and it turns out to be the perfect launch for Diple Kapadia and Rishi Kapoor.

Debut Movie of Dimple Kapadia - Bobby

Debut Movie of Dimple Kapadia - Bobby

    Final Thoughts

Legendary Raj Kapoor was the showman of Indian cinema and made some of the finest classical romantic movies. Movies like “Shree 420”, “Chaliya” and many other romantic movies. Dimple Kapadia was the find of the movie and with instant hit she becomes the overnight star, but for Rishi Kapoor he was carrying the thirty year old legacy of his grandfather Prithviraj Kapoor. Laxmikant-Pyarelal was by far the best music director for two decades and worked with R.K. Studio. Bobby has the most romantic music of the 70’s, especially songs like “Hum Tum Ek Kamre Mein Band Ho” and “Main Shayar To Nahin” became instant classical romantic songs of Indian cinema.

    Storyline

Amit (played by Amitabh Bachhan) and Shekhar (played by Rishi Kapoor) both are orphaned at a very young ages, they grew up independent as Shekhar being a squadron leader in IAF and Amit being a struggling writer. Shekhar fallas in love with Shobha and wants to marry her, but story takes an unpredictable twist as Shekhar dies in a plane crash leaving behind a pregnant and helpless Shobha. Now Amit takes the responsibility of his friend and gets married to Shobha and tells Chandni to forget him. Heartbroken Chandni believes that this is in their fate and marries her childhood friend Dr. Anand (Sanjeev Kumar). Even if Amit and Chandni have accepted what is written in their destiny, but they still love each other.

Their love turns to be an extra marital affair and Amit happens to meet Chandni and their romance is rekindled once again. This on screen romantic couple was part of the controversies as there were lots of rumors about their love affair of Amitabh Bachchan and Rekha that gave this movie an extra mileage. This affair was never proven true which gives the impression that the controversies were created to get publicity for this movie.

Story take lots of roller coaster ride and have lots of convolutions before reaching to the climax. Story becomes unpredictable as both Chandni and Amit realize that what they are doing and will lead them nowhere and they should stick to their partners which happens to be the happy ending of the movie.

    Final Thoughts

Excellent performance made it a classical romantic movie to watch, Amitabh Bachchan is exceptional and director Yash Chopra proved again why he is the king of Romance in Bollywood. The pace of the movie was perfect and engages the audience during the movie. Jaya Bachchan touched the audience with her sensitive performance that touches everyone’s heart and Rekha looked very gorgeous. She has very short role and one should give full credit to her mature performance. Sanjeev Kumar was in a simple character and justified his role with some grace. Yash Chopra was excellent with his screenplay and cinematography.

    Rating

Silsila bags 8.5 out of 10. This classical romantic story deserve this and credit to everyone who is part the bigger crew and worked like a team effort rather than an individual’s effort.
