The first time I ventured into the world of dating my online profile was just three words – ‘looking for love’. It didn’t take me a second to type and less than that to copy from the headline to the main profile. That was easy but that was virtually the end of my first online dating experience. No one bothered to respond nor initiate contact with me. This was the most foolish thing that many of us guys end up doing. In all honesty, my online profile shouldn’t have looked anything like that. Dumb huh! Everyone is looking for love on a dating site. Don’t be intimidated by the process, it isn’t that difficult to come up with a decent profile. You need to be careful not to send out the wrong signals which could be anything from overconfidence to desperation and worse.

The next time I made sure my online profile was what it should be. First, is the screen name. You need to get that right because this is where you announce yourself and urge women to read your profile. Avoid the ‘Big Joe’ or ‘Hot Guy’ stuff. That won’t count at all. I also found the need to describe myself well in my online profile. Don’t use vague terms that could lead to misinterpretation by members of the fairer sex. Avoid writing too much either. Most people will lose interest. The ladies will be impressed with a positive attitude so avoid any negative and disparaging remarks about dating and relationships just in case you have had a bad experience in the past.

I goofed up once while dating online and never made the same mistake again. The biggest mistake I made was my online profile. Looking back, it really sucked, and sucked big time. For any single man or woman serious about dating, the profile is the most important step towards successful dating. Creating an online dating profile can be a daunting task, but not if you take the right approach and follow a few guidelines. The first thing to do is look up some of the profiles on free dating sites and judge each one on a scale of 1 to 10 on your own. If you give a 10 to some one-liners then you are sadly wrong. One thing I learnt is to write my online profile like I speak.

What counts in your online profile is details about your personality and what you desire in a partner. A great way to get your personaility to shine is to note down your strengths and weaknesses and then put them into words. That’s the first step I took in creating my online profile. Then again, be honest about yourself. Honest about your traits and what you look for in a partner. In addition, let people know whether you are looking for a friend, activity partner, or a soul mate. There are singles in the online dating scene for varied reasons, so specify your own. I also made sure my online profile was accompanied by a photo. This is one step that you ought not to skip. It is easy to password protect it if you want your privacy.
